What it’s like to be a Business Development Executive

We take a closer look at what it’s like to be a Business Development Executive as we sit down with Louise Dempster. Louise has worked with CPM for nearly six years representing Lucozade Ribena Suntory – the drinks giants behind many of the UK’s most-loved soft drinks.

What attracted you to CPM?

When I joined the team six years ago, I had no previous sales experience and I came from a retail background. I was looking for a fresh challenge and a Business Development Executive role looked really interesting and a good career move for me to develop my skills and progress. 

I first worked on LRS in the convenience sector for two and a half years, so my job initially was to visit numerous convenience stores in my area to raise brand awareness and sell in the range of soft drinks in-stores. This was a great start where I got to know the full range of products and where they would sit in the market. 

What happened next?

I was given the opportunity to progress and so now I focus on the On-Trade sector but still represent LRS. I spend my days visiting pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants to sell in LRS’ range of drinks including their new premium mixer brand, Merchant’s Heart which is really popular. Before this switch in roles, I’d never worked in the On Trade, but it’s been fun learning about this incredibly fast-paced and ever-changing industry. I was supported every step of the way with training from my manager and my colleagues which helped to give me the knowledge, ability and confidence to excel in my role.

What’s your typical day like?

There is no ‘typical’ day really! My days are busy and varied, which are some of the many reasons I love being a Business Development Executive. I get to travel quite a lot and I’m always meeting new and interesting people from all walks of life. You have to be a people person in this role as building strong relationships with clients is important. I enjoy working to targets and it gives me great job satisfaction when I can turn a no into a yes and land the sale. 

Tell us about the best part of your job?

That’s easy – it’s the people. My customers and my team really make my job special. You meet so many people that you can learn from and everyone supports each other so it’s a great environment to build your career. I would recommend a role in sales to anyone! It’s rewarding and I love that no day is ever the same. There are of course challenges as well and the On-Trade industry can be tough, but I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else!
